U.S. Steel Class Action Certified

May 12, 2023.  Judge Philip A. Ignelzi of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, entered an Order certifying Hernandez v. U.S. Steel as a class action and issued an Opinion regarding class certification.

This class action was initiated by Mon Valley neighbors in 2019 due to ongoing pollution following a catastrophic fire (Christmas Eve 2018) at U.S. Steel’s Clairton Plant. U.S. Steel continued operations for months even though the fire knocked out pollution controls and the sulfur from the fire had not been cleaned from its coke gas emissions. As a result, air pollution spiked in the Mon Valley. The Allegheny County Health Department warned residents to limit their time outdoors and to keep all windows and doors closed. Residents experienced offensive odor, burning eyes, nose, and throat, difficulty breathing, headaches, and nausea.
